About Decidim

Decidim is a digital platform for participatory democracy. With its numerous modules and options, you can design a wide variety of participatory experiences. These guides will do two things:

  1. Share use-cases of participatory experiences in Decidim
  2. Manuals of use, by modules

In this wiki, you will find all the information relating to the use of Decidim and the activities that play a part in the configuration of a platform in order to create participatory processes. Acquiring knowledge in administering Decidim enables control over fundamental matters such as:

  • configuring a participatory process
  • activating a consultation and receiving votes
  • moderating the platform
  • managing associated legal texts (as the privacy policy)
  • managing authorization from the administrators
  • monitoring and verifying organizations

Managing (administering) a Decidim platform does not require knowledge of any programming language however some configuration steps might not be intuitive and require some learning on Decidim jargon and ecosystem. We have tried to lay out as much as possible the intricacies of Decidim administration in the wiki. Current and future administrators of Decidim platforms will be able to learn how they can configure their platforms as well as how to set up and manage the various participatory processes.

While these aspects only require small technical configuration steps they do involve a series of political decisions that will define how you want your Decidim platform to function. Such decisions relate to overarching issues such as what messages and contents are contained, what is the moderation policy for comments and debates, and, how a specific participatory process needs to be configured in order to achieve its objectives. In this wiki, you will be able to understand the socio-technical implications of choices you can take as a Decidim platform administrator.

Spaces & components

An initial step in understanding how Decidim works is to distinguish between spaces and components. On the one hand, participatory spaces are the channels that citizens can participate in when public decisions are being taken. These are participatory processes, initiatives, consultations, and assemblies. On the other hand, participatory components are mechanisms that enable interaction between users of the platform and the various participatory spaces. These include meetings, pages, proposals, and surveys.

A participatory space (blue) will incorporate several components (red) such as meetings, proposals, surveys etc…

Participatory spaces are configured by defining (and configuring) the components that will be part of a specific participatory process. Yet, these participatory components and their functions can be repeated in various spaces. In turn, it offers several opportunities when it comes to configuring each participatory space. To simplify learning you can keep in mind that once a space has been configured, it will then be easier to configure the following one.

In the below sections, you will find full descriptions of how to configure the different spaces and their associated components in your Decidim platform.
