Define scopes

General information

Overview

This page helps define and understand a powerful and key element when setting up your Decidim platform.

Scopes can be understood as territories or topics that your Decidim Platform can have. Scopes can have sub-scopes that allow them to go one level deeper.

For example, in the case of the city of Barcelona, the scopes are the districts of the city, and the sub-scopes are district neighborhoods. The scopes can also be differentiated by types, so that they can be configured, for example, by thematic as well as territorial scopes.

Scopes can be used in most components and spaces of your Decidim platform.

Options

Filter content

For filtering: most of the spaces and components allow an administrator or a participant to associate them with a scope. This allows you to filter scopes when exploring them:

Examples

  • In the Accountability module scopes can be used to filter Results
  • Assemblies and Processes can have Scopes. They are used for filtering multiple assemblies in the main listing page (/assemblies or /processes). Scopes can be hidden by unchecking the "Enable participatory space filters" in the admin’s configuration page.
  • Filtering through Scopes using the sidebar is possible in Budgets Projects, Initiatives, and Proposals. In some of these components, you can control if these filters are shown with the "Scopes enabled" checkbox in the component settings. This will also enable or disable the scope selector in the resource creation form.

You can also configure a participatory space so the filtering will only concern one scope and a sub-scope. For example, if your organization has 3 different scopes for 3 cities, each of them having sub-scopes for each cities neighborhoods. On a participatory space that concerns only one of the cities, you will be able to select only this scope and its sub-scopes so that users do not see the scopes of other cities in the filter options.

Customize interests & newsletters

A Participant can choose which Scopes she wants to follow in its account.

This is used by the Newsletters, in the "Select recipients to deliver" step, "Filter for users having activated any selected scope in their account’s My Interests settings." section.
